Finding a Therapist For Depression Can Be Important
I have seen time after time; clients coming into my office saying, “I thought the depression would just go away.” Unfortunately for most, this is not the case. Depression can be a constant companion that follows you throughout your life. It is something that can come so unexpectedly. It shocks people at times when they discover that they may actually be depressed.
Depression can be caused by so many different things. It could be a current life stressor or situation, it could be biological, loss of achievement, loss of goals, or loss of positive feelings towards oneself. Typically, low energy plays a role in whether the person is going to get out of bed in the morning or manage the day.
Finding a therapist for depression is important because usually the person needs to work through specific issues, they need support, they need ideas, or they may just need someone to keep them accountable. Our brains are really good at convincing us that the best thing to do when we’re feeling depressed is to relax, take a break or to tell the person “you deserve this break.” It thinks it’s helping, when really it may be sabotaging.
Can A Therapist For Depression Really Help?
The quick answer is YES. Sometimes, just talking about what is happening within our brains is enough to help jumpstart a person into becoming happier. A therapist for depression can help in many different ways. My approach specifically is based on a behavioral model and cognitive behavioral therapy. The way we think is the way we feel. We need to recognize thoughts and how they relate to our everyday feelings. Even just saying words differently. For instance; if I said, “I am ALWAYS in traffic” I am going to get a different bodily response then if I said, “I am sometimes in traffic”. While both scenarios are not fun, you can see that if I focus on not overgeneralizing I will won’t feel as angry or depressed.
Stop Waiting For Depression To Go Away
We have been fooled into thinking that depression can be related to a physical sickness such as a cold. If you wait long enough it should go away right? This is not true. Depression takes a spiraling motion; which means, once it starts it becomes difficult to stop. When hitting the bottom, reversing the spiral takes work and support. This is where a therapist for depression can help motivate and keep accountable an individual who may be struggling.
Waiting intensifies mental and physical fatigue. Meaning, it is going to be harder to function in your everyday activities or obligations. My goal for any client I work with is to help build their energy levels by doing the opposite of what the person may want to do. Exercise. That’s right; we tend to believe that exercise will only make the person more tired. Instead, it gives more strength, more energy and releases dopamine. Dopamine is the chemical that makes us feel good and happy. It may be the thing your body is lacking; thus, causing depression.
Ultimately, depression can develop for anyone. It can be how our body is wired and how our brain works. It can also be because of stressful moments in life that we are trying to adjust to. Either way, living with depression is not fun. Please stop the waiting game and find a therapist for depression. They can help, the lost time in life is not worth the wait.
